Free Froggy Pattern

I have another new pattern out! The Froggy pattern is now available as a free download on the Knit Picks Website. It's a really fun and quick knit. It is also fairly simple, so it's great for beginners.

The body and head are knit in one piece from the bottom up and stuffed along the way. The eyes, arms and legs are worked separately and then sewn on. The fingers are made with I-Cords and are worked as part of the arms and legs (not separately) so that there aren't lots of ends to sew in. All pieces are worked in the round on double point needles.

Hope you all enjoy this wonderful little toy!

Birthday Gifts

It was a bit challenging figuring out what to make my nephew this year for his birthday. He has plenty of stuffed toys and doesn't need any more (I've been told that he insists on taking his dinosaur, dog and football to bed with him every night.) His parents requested something he could play with outside, so I decided to make him some discs that he can use in the yard. I crocheted this project instead of knitting it. That way I was better able to make a firm fabric that would fly through the air nicely. It also helped make the really awesome swirl pattern. My hands aren't used to crocheting, so by the third disc they were a bit sore. It was worth it though, the discs turned out great and my nephew immediately began throwing them around.

For my niece's birthday she requested a purse. Purple and yellow with a blue button. Purple is one of my favorite colors, and it pairs nicely with yellow. I used some artistic license, however, with the button choice. All of the blue buttons that I found just ruined the lovely purple purse. Then I found a yellow button that matched the darker yellow perfectly. I was much happier with the final product, and my niece either didn't remember her original request or simply didn't care. She seemed very pleased with her new accessory.

Felted projects are always fun. It is amazing how much the fabric changes from one little run through the washer. Making this purse made me want to do more felting. Maybe I will make a purse for myself. Green with purple stripes would look nice. It may be a while before I get to that though. With the holidays a few months away, my knitting time is filling up quickly!

Puppy Dog Playset Pattern now available!

It took a lot longer than I anticipated, but I finally finished the Puppy Dog Playset Pattern! I'm really happy with the finished product and it was definitely worth all of the hard work. The pattern is 18 pages long. It includes a title page with table of contents, pattern information, written instructions for the Beagle, a chart for the Beagle, written directions for a plain dog, written directions for accessories as well as abbreviations. I formatted the pattern so that the knitter can choose which sections they want to use so that they don't have to print the whole 18 pages. If you only want to knit a solid colored dog, you don't need to print the Beagle instructions and chart.

I made quite a few changes to the original pattern to get all the shaping the way that I wanted it. The idea is still the same, but everything looks a lot smoother. I added some short rows to the front legs to make them attach to the body at a slight angle the way the back legs do. I also added short rows to all four feet so they would look more paw like. Short rows now shape the stomach of the puppy and are still used to form the top of the head. I know that's a lot of short rows, but I find that it is a very useful technique when shaping three dimensional objects.

By far my favorite feature of this pattern is the food and water dishes. I love that kids will be able to feed and water their toy puppy. The dishes are great for make-believe play.

More puppies.

I made several puppies in the process of working out the shaping. At one point I didn't have enough yarn in any neutral colors, so I made a pink puppy and a blue puppy. All the puppies will have bowls and collars soon and should be added to my etsy shop in time for the holidays.
